The class began with an engaging, hands-on dotara-making session, offering the children a unique opportunity to learn about traditional craftsmanship firsthand. For this special session, Ali Laskar, a skilled artisan with considerable experience in making these traditional instruments, travelled from a remote village near Magrahat in South 24 Parganas to share his expertise with the children.
Ali Laskar walked the children through the intricate process of assembling the various parts of the dotara, demonstrating each step with patience and care. The children watched closely as he explained how the different components of the instrument came together to form the final product. Beyond assembly, he also demonstrated how to play the dotara, giving the children insight into both the construction and musical application of this traditional instrument indigenous to Bengal. This session provided a rare and valuable opportunity for the children to interact with an artisan and understand the cultural and artistic heritage behind such handcrafted instruments.
Following this enriching experience, the focus of the class shifted to mathematics, where the children were introduced to constructing polygons using GeoGebra, a dynamic mathematics software. This exercise allowed them to explore geometric concepts in an interactive, digital environment, helping them visualize and construct various polygonal shapes with precision.
The day's session concluded with a reflective writing exercise, during which the children penned down their thoughts and reflections on the day's classes. This gave them a chance to consolidate their learning experiences, from the traditional craftsmanship of dotara-making to the digital exploration of geometry, into their own words and reflections.
