Week 18 of the Hundred Miles Project brought together composition and financial planning in this stage's assessment paper, alongside a hands-on session that returned to the French knot and buttonhole stitch. In the Literacy module, participants read a letter left by a grandmother for her grandchildren, urging them to keep reading, questioning, and learning no matter how the world changes, and were then asked to write their own seven to eight sentence letter to someone younger, passing on similar advice about the value of learning.
The Numeracy section introduced household budgeting, asking learners to work out what remained from a monthly income after food, rent, and transport costs, express rent as a fraction of income, recalculate the budget after a ten percent income rise, and divide savings into equal parts, all set out in a simple budget table. Digital Literacy turned to online safety and responsible phone use, with learners researching how to back up WhatsApp messages, checking their monthly data usage, and finding their screen-time statistics in phone settings, followed by a short reflection on using a phone responsibly.
In the hands-on session, learners revisited the French knot and buttonhole stitch together, working on combining the two into a single decorative edge rather than practising each in isolation. This combination proved more demanding than either stitch alone, and several learners needed extra guidance to keep their spacing consistent as they moved between the two techniques. Across the day, the themes of planning ahead and building on earlier skills carried through both the assessment and the stitching practice. Next week's session will continue refining this combined stitch work.
