IIT Kanpur Mathematics Department Opens Olympiad Route for Admission

Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur will be admitting students through Olympiads. Several departments are slated to take the Olympiad route for BTech and BS programmes (for the academic year 2025-26)

• Biological Sciences & Bioengineering
• Computer Science & Engineering,
• Chemistry,
• Economic Sciences and
• Mathematics & Statistics

In particular Mathematical Olympiads are very effective for admission to top-notch undergraduate programmes in India and the United States. There are three levels of real math olympiads in India. I emphasise the word 'real' because there are quite a few fake olympiads out there.

These three levels are:

• IOQM (usually held in September, attended by approximately 60000 to 70000 students). See this year's IOQM Paper here.
• RMO (usually in November, attended by around 6000 students). See the 2024 RMO paper here.
• INMO (Indian National Math Olympiad)

In the third level (INMO) is usually 80 students are successful. Incidentally, in the year 2023, 10 out of these 80 kids were from Cheenta Academy for Olympiad & Research.

Usually these kids are invited with open arms by institutions like Indian Statistical Institute, Chennai Mathematical Institute and so on. It seems IIT Kanpur is joining the league.
