Project: Leaf Detectives

The inaugural session of Uddalaka was a memorable one, attended by three young participants, Rusha, Aaryan, and Aanhik — all studying in grades 2 through 4. As part of the session's outdoor component, the children visited Rabindra Sarobar, where they explored the natural surroundings and collected leaves from Kadam and Peepul trees. This hands-on activity was designed to help them engage directly with nature and observe the physical characteristics of different plant species firsthand.

Throughout the excursion, the children were accompanied and guided by faculty members and facilitators from Cheenta, who ensured that the activities remained both educational and safe. Their parents were also present, lending support and encouragement as the children navigated this new experience.

Upon returning from the field visit, the children were asked to count the major veins on the leaves they had collected, an exercise meant to sharpen their observational skills. However, given their young age, the counting process turned out to be considerably slower than anticipated. The faculty found it challenging to keep the children focused and consistently following instructions, which is understandable considering their developmental stage.

As part of the session's concluding activity, the children were encouraged to write reflections in a diary about their day's experience. Most responses were positive, but interestingly, one child noted that he felt traumatized by the outdoor experience, a candid remark that offered valuable insight into the varied emotional responses young children may have to new and unfamiliar environments.
