The class began with an engaging, hands-on activity involving the colouring of paper cubes and tetrahedrons, which gave the children a tactile introduction to three-dimensional shapes. As part of this exercise, they also practiced counting the edges, vertices, and faces of these solids, helping them build a strong foundational understanding of basic geometric properties in a fun and interactive manner.
Following this activity, the children were introduced to the process of constructing polygons using GeoGebra, a dynamic mathematics software. This digital exercise allowed them to explore polygonal shapes in an interactive environment, reinforcing the geometric concepts they had just engaged with through the paper cube and tetrahedron activity, while also introducing them to technology-assisted learning.
After the mathematics session, the children moved on to a reflective writing exercise, during which they wrote down their thoughts and reflections on the day's classes in their notebooks, allowing them to consolidate their learning experiences in their own words.
The day's session had also included plans for an outdoor component, wherein the children were meant to identify polygons within the bamboo structures of the Durga Puja pandals currently under construction nearby. This activity was designed to help them recognize geometric shapes in real-world, culturally relevant contexts, connecting classroom learning to the festive preparations happening around them. However, due to a paucity of time, this planned outdoor activity could not be carried out on this occasion. Despite this, the day's indoor sessions offered a rich and well-rounded exploration of geometric concepts, from physical models to digital constructions and reflective writing.
