About Berkeley Math Tournament

The Berkeley Math Tournament Group is an association established at the College of California-Berkeley. This organization is led by students and was founded in early 2010. The goal of this organization is to create a holistic and high-quality math competition that engages and challenges participants to excel beyond the limits of the classroom.

This Tournament takes place in spring. It encourages high school students from the Bay Area and elsewhere to celebrate Mathematics with like-minded people and get a taste of higher Mathematics.

Before going on, let us tell you, why should you participate in these tournaments.

Reasons to Participate in Math Tournaments:-

  • Math Tournaments provide brighter students with additional challenges and help them understand how they stack up against their peers.
  • Participating in these contests help children to enhance their analytical skills and critical thinking.
  • Also, in these tournaments, children participate in groups that increase their ability to work in a team and also sharpen their leadership qualities.
  • Children find their friends, inspiration, and encouragement in these contests, which might be difficult to find in the typical classrooms.

Who can Participate?

Any Middle school student can participate in the Berkeley Math Tournament.

Stages of Berkeley Math Tournament (BMT Math)

This tournament is team-based wherein a coach leads a team of 6 individuals.

Final team scores are calculated by a linear combination of focus, team, and power results, with their respective weights, noted below:-

  • Focus:- 25%
  • INDIVIDUAL:- 25%
  • TEAM:- 20%
  • POWER:- 30%

The top finishers at BMT will qualify for the USMCA national championship.

Berkeley Math Tournament Events:-

Focus Round

Students will take one of four focus rounds during the tournament. The focus round allows students to display their skills in particular mathematical topics. Each test contains 10 short answer questions to be solved in 60 minutes. The focus rounds consist of:

  • Algebra: Equations and summations, functions and inverses, theory of roots and polynomials.
  • Discrete : Discrete probability, counting and combinations, modular arithmetic, divisibility and primes, base arithmetic, linear Diophantine equations.
  • Geometry: Areas and volumes, two and three-dimensional Euclidean geometry, geometric probability.
  • Calculus: Differentiation, optimization and related rates (50%) and integration, sequences/series (50%).

Individual Round

The individual round will be an 80 minute, 20 question test that will test understanding in all the focus topics.

Team Round

The team round consists of 15 questions with numeric answers to be solved in 40 minutes. Team members may work together on this round, and only one answer sheet will be collected.

Power Round

The power round is a 60-minute team test containing several multi-part questions focusing on a single topic. The questions emphasize logical rigor and ask for proof of all claims.

Talks and Activities

Some events will aim to begin an open-ended dialogue on certain areas of abstract or applied mathematics, while others will focus on more inventive skills, like juggling or card counting. Talks and activities information will be released closer to the tournament date.

Logic and Problem Solving Summer Camp in Stanford - An Overview


As the summer vacation begins, many of us will be sending our kids to summer camp for good reason. The Stanford Logic and Problem Solving Summer Camp is a three-week intensive summer camp for mathematically gifted middle and high school students. Eligibility

  • A candidate must be 14-15 years of age on the first day of the session.
  • He/she must be in the 8 or 9 grade.
  • He/ she must complete an algebra course as a prerequisite.

Date of the commencement of the summer camp session 2- July 13, 2020 - July 31, 2020

The extended date to apply for session 2 is March 25, 2020.

Application Process:-


Course Selection

Students may apply to up to six courses. They can rank their top choices on the application. Applicants will be reviewed for admissions to each course separately and in order of their course preferences.

Review Process

Applications will be reviewed by a team of Stanford Pre-Collegiate Summer Institutes instructors in order of the applicant's course preferences. Each applicant is evaluated holistically. If offered admission, an applicant is admitted into one course determined to be the best fit. Their course preferences and overall suitability will be considered.

Notification of Admissions Decision

They will notify their admissions decision, once the admission decision is made. The applicants will be notified approximately one month after the stated deadline.

An excursion in Linear Algebra

Pick up any odd book on linear algebra. Matrices, base changes, eigen-values will pop up. It is hard to appreciate why an intelligent person should spend hours and days, mastering these skills. Our excursion, begins with an attempt to understand that very thing: essence of linear algebra and its motivation.

Here is a brief sketch of the session:

  1. Motivation: Einstein badly needed linear algebra. Why?
  2. Essence: All about Linear operators, their domain, codomains and how wonderfully they are related with distance!
  3. The Determinant Tool: Axiomatically determinant is just a function from ordered tuple of \( n^2 \) real numbers to one real number.
  4. Invariant subspaces and factorization: You can factorize a matrix. But ‘essentially’ that is a comment on invariant subspaces.

This open session is scheduled on 14th November, Thursday 2019 at 8 PM I.S.T.

An Introduction to Chaos 

The concept of chaotic systems goes back to Newtonian mechanics, but the current qualitative approach began only in the late 1800s. In this talk, we shall try to explain informally the concept, give some simple examples and introduce some of the tools used to study them.

A great way to study groups is to study group automorphisms. They are structure-preserving maps from a group to itself.

Some subgroups are 'invariant' under all group automorphisms. They are known as characteristic subgroups.

One example of the characteristic subgroup is the commutator subgroup.

In this seminar, we will explore these ideas.
